Hi everyone–
Just a quick note to let you all know that we have posted the information about the new sites for this year! We are so excited about the new sites ASB has to offer for Spring 2010, as well as thrilled to be returning to places with which we have an established and effective relationship. Special thanks to Alyssa Van Camp and Deno Saclarides, our wonderful Site and Service Development chairs who worked all summer to find and establish the new sites. They’re really outdone themselves–peruse the list of sites and you’ll see how!
And of course, if you haven’t already, get your site leader applications from any residence hall or the CPH!
As ever,
ASBoard

ASB was recently featured in Vandy’s Arts and Science Magazine. Part of their “Back in the Day” segment, the article featured photos and news stories from throughout Vandy ASB’s 20+ year history. Check it out here.

Last month, Break Away, our national umbrella program, announced the winners of their National Alternative Break Awards. Our very own Charlotte Hassen and Shaiya Baer were each given the Honorable Mention in their respective categories. Charlotte, our current Placements Co-Chair and last year’s PR Co-Chair, was honored as the runner-up for Active Citizen of the Year, while Shaiya, our OACS advisor, was the runner-up for Staff Person of the Year. Each was selected from a pool of nominees from Alternative Break programs all around the nation. Their honors are the perfect way to cap an amazing year for Vandy ASB. Congrats to them both!

Hi, friends.
The semester is winding down. We officially had our last class of the 08-09 school year. We’ve got a week of finals ahead of us. Graduation follows that. Things are a little crazy here in Vandyland, but we wanted to drop in, say hello, and share a couple of neat pieces of news.

First, The Vanderbilt View, a monthly magazine published by the university, has done a feature on our very own Dean Larry Dowdy. Having been on ASB every year since 1991, Dean Dowdy is a bit of an institution around here. Check it out!

Next, for a bit of fun, congratulations are due to our ASB Pillow Fight Champions! Vanderbilt hosted a “Pillow Fight for Parkinsons” event a few weeks ago where ASB walked away the valiant victors. It took us all year, but we finally won something for you, Leigh!
Good luck to everyone as the year wraps up! Have a great summer and see you in the fall!

As difficult as it may be to believe, the week of ASB 2k9 has come and gone. This time last week, nearly 450 Vanderbilt students were spread across the nation and abroad building homes, pulling weeds, and cleaning store rooms. They were working everywhere from soup kitchens to classrooms. Each and every ASB-er was busy traveling the open road and making 11 new best friends. They were learning. They were living. They were loving. What a week, eh?
We’ll be back here soon with info on Board Applications for 2010 and major website updates, but for now, enjoy a few — okay, a lot of group photos from the week that was.

We’ve seen quite a bit since our last update. We wrapped up our first semester and saw 2008 come to a close. Our beloved ‘Dores sealed a bowl victory for the first time in 53 years. A number of our participants, site leaders, and board members put in a week of service with our friends at Alternative Winter Break. We’ve even inaugurated a new president.
Our second day of service went nicely as we again danced all morning with kids at Paragon Mills and lopped with the best of them at Radnor Lake.

Thanks to Leigh for the sweet picture!
Well, we just wanted to drop in and say hello. Don’t forget about Orientation on Sunday! 3pm in Wilson!
